Hi man! Yeah, personally I believe that it is generally done consciously. For example the way that most big tech companies apply this habit forming formula to their UX design, is a conscious choice, that in my eyes is morally questionable: https://www.uxpin.com/studio/blog/hook-users-habit-forming-ux-design/ However, we are all embedded in a culture, that has for better or worse put profit as the primary driver of most business decisions. This does in some way place the blame only half on the individual, and in my eyes, half on the society/culture that the individual in embedded in: company culture, or wider societal culture.
